Things heard on the radio

  1. You can be a part of a local research study on binge drinking if you drink heavily at least twice a week. Drinking “heavily,” for females, is defined as more than four drinks at a sitting; for males, more than five. I’m guessing the standards might be different in another part of the country.
  2. According to a recent CBS nationwide poll, President Bush’s approval rating is at 28%. Nixon’s at its lowest was 24%. The radio announcer claimed that both dentist visits and Brussels sprouts are rated higher.
  3. The state legislature is proposing a bill to lower, from fourteen to twelve, the age that children are allowed to hunt big game. In contrast, they are also proposing a bill to limit salon tanning to persons 18 and over unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  4. The state legislature also wants to pass a law to restrict abortion except in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. Anticipating that the law will be challenged as unconstitutional, the legislature has set aside a $5 million defense fund. This in the state that has the lowest per-pupil spending in the entire country.
  5. Utah has just passed the first bill in the nation approving tuition tax credits (school vouchers) and the governor has stated he will sign this bill into law. This in the state that has the lowest per-pupil spending in the entire country.

Every morning during the week I listen to a local, independent radio station—X96. Their morning program is called “Radio From Hell” and it’s a breath of fresh air. They stream on-line and have listeners all over the world.

All are appalling, but #3 is just plain asinine. Did you hear the justification for the decrease in the hunting age???? “To instill an appreciation for nature in younger children.” Yes, I am not making that up.

Ah, yes ~ nature at its finest: dead animals. And, of course, salon tanning is SO MUCH MORE dangerous than a 30.06 in the hands of a twelve year old.

Oh and they also said kids as young as six can drive a ATV. You can carry a gun and drive a vehicle but you can’t go to a tanning salon. Fuck heads.

So, does this mean a 6-year-old can drive an ATV with his rifle-toting, 12-year-old sibling seated next to him?
