Blanketed with care

img_3002.jpgThe past few weeks here in Salt Lake City have been rather grim. We know of so many people who have been touched by immeasurable sadness and grief. There has been an outpouring of love and support for the many people wounded—physically, emotionally, spiritually—by the various events that have befallen our community.

Yet, one particular image has haunted my memory. The newspaper printed a photo of a nine year old girl, sobbing into a woman’s arms. This child’s older brother is dead; before he died he took the lives of five other people in this small city.

There seems little I can do to assuage this child’s grief, or the grief of so many others. But I can knit, and I invite you to join me.

I’d like to follow in the tradition of other knitters and put together some knitted blankets for these children and families. If you’d like to participate, please knit an 8-inch square of worsted-weight superwash wool, in any color you like. Send me a message via my blog or email letting me know that you are participating. I’d like to collect the squares by April 1st, or sooner, if possible, so I can get them sewn together and passed on to the recepients.

If you have any suggestions to make this project go more smoothly, please send them along to me. I’ve never attempted anything like this before, but I know the generosity of knitters can make this happen.

Bless you—and thank you.

I’m certainly in for at least two squares. How can we get this more publicity? Or maybe we don’t need to. But it’s something small that will maybe make a difference. And that’s worth something.
