It’s the snowplows you have to watch out for

8:50 am, intersection of 1300 East and 2700 South, snowing like Christmas (I wish!) Notice the windshield wipers; yes, I am driving and snapping photos at the same time. Sometimes multi-tasking can be taken a bit too far, I’ll admit.

8:53 am, stopped at the signal on 1300 East and 3300 South. It appears this snowplow would like to merge into traffic in front of me. Judging from how close that scoop is to the front quarter panel of my car, and despite the fact that the plow is pulling out of a grocery store parking lot onto a four lane city street, it seems prudent to let the plow go first, even if he’s being rude about it.

Even IF the car in front of me was only this far in front of me, and the light was green.

I have a class that starts and 9:00 am, and technically I should have been at school by 8:30, so no matter how you slice it, I’m late. I’m about to call my next-door neighbor teacher and ask her to unlock my door when my phone rings. Yep, she’s late too. Oh, well.

Look at that nicely cleared street (though the Subaru was having no trouble at all with the little bit of snow on the road to begin with). Does the good karma I earned for not playing chicken with the snowplow make up for taking photos and talking on my cell phone while negotiating winter driving conditions?

I didn’t think so.

It appears the snowplow has decided to plow the CENTER turning lane, and is pushing snow into my lane. WTF? Cut in front of me so you can plow snow into my path? Bad form.

The University of Utah closed classes at noon, but public schools NEVER close in Utah. That would be admitting defeat, and, besides, we’d have to make the day up later. It did snow pretty hard until about 12:30 or so, but here’s our sky at 5:00 pm.

Tricky weather we have here.

Threading Water informs us that it’s Polar Bear Day. Since polar bears have long been my favorite animal, I spent some time reading up on them at Polar Bears International. Anyone up for a trip to Churchill, Manitoba?

I wonder if it was the same plow that honked to let me know he wanted to come past me this morning at 9.30 on Fort Union Bld? He was right behind me but the visibility was practically nil and I couldn’t see him. I had to pull over to the other side of the road to let him go, but at least he did clear my path! Maybe they just hate Subarus?

I doubt there’s only one cranky snowplow driver, but you were nearly in the right neighborhood! This plow turned west on 4500 South, though, so it was probably a different grump you were dealing with.

Oh, it looks so serene compared to the traffic we battled going in to Boston during Monday’s snowstorm. Took us 2 hours to cover what is normally a 40 minute drive. I knit the whole way. (Didn’t think to take pics!)

I can’t believe you documented your whole commute with pictures. You are crazy.

    But in a good way.

An entertaining saga.. glad not every work day is like that. My driving escapades were easier than in many heavy storms this time.

You havent the first clue about snow removal. Plow drivers are doing exactly what they should be doing…clearing the road. As for clearing the center lane, its only common sense starting in the middle and working your way out. When the sides are done first and then they go back to the middle it defeats the whole purpose of plowing since it all needs to be done again to get the snow to the curb. As for plow drivers being agressive, its because idiots dont realize we have a job to do to provide safe public streets to drive on.

Of COURSE I don’t know the first thing about snow removal–I’m a “civilian,” friend. What to you may seem like “common sense,” to me seems like a pain in the ass. So while it may make perfect sense to a plow driver that he or she push snow into my path, SURELY you can see that it would seem rather inconvenient to me?

And why do you hide behind anonymity? If you’re going to come to MY blog to bash me, at least have the courage to claim your snarky words. Troll.
