Again, Utah looks kooky

And it’s even on Boing Boing.

So again we’ve got national attention because one of our local yokels has made an ass of himself. As the Salt Lake Tribune reports, Don Larsen, a Republican party delegate, has decided that Satan’s new plot to ruin America is to flood it with immigrants. And he brought a resolution to the Utah County Republican Convention on Saturday.

According to Mr. Larsen,

In order for Satan to establish his ‘New World Order’ and destroy the freedom of all people as predicted in the Scriptures, he must first destroy the U.S. The mostly quiet and unspectacular invasion of illegal immigrants does not focus the attention of the nations the way open warfare does, but is all the more insidious for its stealth and innocuousness.

Let me tell you a little bit about Utah. The last census tagged our population at just over 2.5 million. Nearly half of that is concentrated in the metropolitan area in and around Salt Lake City, and the rest dispersed among the many small towns that make up the rest of the state. Salt Lake City’s mayor, Rocky Anderson–an outspoken liberal who has called for the impeachment of the POTUS, faced down Bill O’Reilly and is/was slated to debate Sean Hannity–is HATED by much of the rest of the state, but often admired in Salt Lake City. So our state legislature often does not reflect the views of a significant portion of the population.

Utah County is best known as the home of BYU and the reddest county in the country in the last presidential election. As I mentioned before, BYU invited Vice President Cheney to speak at this year’s commencement; an “alternate” commencement was held also, at Utah Valley State College, where Ralph Nader was the featured speaker. Nader told the audience of his father, who asked him when he came home from school,

Well, did you learn to believe, or did you learn to think?

Utahns would be well advised to consider those wise words.

As a legal immigrant, am I still an agent of Satan? I hope not, that would be a downer. If I have tempted anyone to the dark side, I hope you had fun and I apologize.
