Happy Solstice

William and I decided to venture into unfamiliar territory and greet the solstice sunrise. Carefully checking our Internets, we learned that sunrise would occur at 7:48 am in Salt Lake City, and so stumbled out of bed and into the pre-dawn 13 degree darkness to seek the light.

Seven forty-eight my ass.  Perhaps across the valley on the western-most edges of Salt Lake City, but near the mountains, where I live, actual sunrise occurs closer to nine o’clock.

Ah, hindsight.  Unfamiliar as we were with this time of morning, however, we hadn’t any idea where to best observe the cresting of the sun, and so chased it around the Salt Lake valley.

As I snapped that last photo, my camera flashed me the following ominous warning:

MEMORY CARD FULL

just as William cried out, “The SUN!”

Did I mention I was using a new camera? In the moments it took me to figure out how to erase previous photos from the measly 32mb card that came standard, I missed the actual blinding moment of sunrise. The photo at the top of the page is from a few moments after.

I need a cup of coffee.

Great photo! Myself, I got to work all night, but the weirdness of the night at work told me clearly that the solstice was making its mark! One year, I need to drive over to Lubec, ME (easternmost town in the US) and watch the solstice sunrise there!

    Merry Christmas!

I guess it depends on what you’re measuring. . .we were celebrating the return of the sun and longer days to come. Though I was definitely more awake at 11:08 last night (when, it’s true, the solstice actually happened–6:08 UTC)). . .

    Still a great picture.

What if it’s like a message from the Universie: “put down the camera and live!”? No, wait, the universe likes your photographs, too…

Sometimes a full memory card is just a full memory card, right?

What a beautiful tradition, and the pictures are stunning.

I’ve made Christmas gifts with your yarn, I’ll have pictures for Rav later (sweaters for stuffed animals, and a *rat* sweater!). My son, Sam, has been ‘finger knitting’ scarves for stuffed animals and his girl-cousins out of the eyelash - he *loves* the stuff. I gifted some to a young girl friend and she’s been making little pokemon out of them - you should have seen her face, how happy she was.

I’ve been thinking grateful thoughts towards you for at least a week-
