The physics of snowflakes

If this photograph doesn’t WOW you, there are many more to behold at SnowCrystals.com, a site devoted to the history and science of snowflakes. Created by Kenneth Libbrecht, professor of physics at CalTech, the website is a fascinating collection of photographs, descriptions, and explanations of how snowflakes are created, including a movie of a snowflake growing in a lab. Mesmerizing.

The weather in SLC has been unusual. We’ve had snow every couple of days; I can’t remember another December quite like it. It’s beautiful, and quiet, and cold. I love it–especially since I get to be inside a warm house. This snowflake website just spoke to me in a fascinating whisper–go lose yourself there for a minute or two.

I came upon the snowflake information through a new (to me) Firefox Add-on. StumbleUpon has become my new timesink. Check it out for yourself–I told the site I was interested in knitting and whaddya know–Knitty.com was one of the first sites SU sent me to.

Stay warm, friends.

StumbleUpon is cool, but, just a word of warning. It creates a profile that is not editable or deletable, based upon your StumbleUpon ratings. I found myself by googling one of my internet personas, and I don’t necessarily want my interests out there in the way SU presents it. Since you have a rather unique user ID (unless you use a different one for SU), you may find this to be similar. From now on I’m going to use jdoe50008999 as my userID. At least that way my stuff will be buried in 10 jillion other Google entries. –cheers and happy new year–
