I have no particular concern for the people who run screaming from the room whenever someone swears, or want to ban profanity from Ravelry, but I also don’t particularly agree with deliberately baiting people, especially when others will get caught in the crossfire, especially Jess and Casey. I’ve been put into the position of having to deal with inappropriate postings on a mailing list more than once, and it’s no picnic. And what about all of the people who are now reading all of this crap in Radar who weren’t even the ones who were complaining? I know that even my own husband would say “Fuck ‘em if they can’t take it”, but I don’t agree. And I think that this is only going to cause a lot of trouble and work for Casey, because he’ll probably have to figure out how to flag groups to allow people to filter out adult content or profanity.
I see your point, Cheryl. Yet I also understand that the deliberate baiting is a backlash against the perceived self-righteousness of other posters who come off as judgmental. It is only that one thread. Many of the other threads have nothing to do with the greater Ravelry world.
Casey drops in on the forum occasionally, and seems to recognize that it’s primarily a place for folks to let off steam. He did give the forum a “parental advisory” warning sticker.
The reality of Radar is, if one is likely to be offended, then perhaps that person should approach Radar with caution. I’ve come across posts from other groups on Radar that make me shake my head in disgust, but it is what it is. There is now an option to exclude mature content from Radar.
I know Casey had talked about creating “mature content” filters previously, so I don’t think this group created the issue so much as pushed it.
I’ve no problem with the Lazy, Stupid & Godless group itself - I find that quite amusing. It’s just that one thread. I guess I just found the whole idea of it a bit juvenile, even though I understand why it was done. And again, I have no sympathy for the holier-than-thou crowd it’s aimed at, nor does the content bother me personally.
But I’m probably more sensitive to the issue than most, since I’ve had to deal with it as an administrator, and I know that sometimes it escalates to the point where normally tolerant people start getting pissed off, and things get really ugly. Trust me, I’ve been there. My concern was more for Ravelry in general, and Casey in particular.
I rarely read any groups, and have only looked at the Radar a couple of times - I didn’t realize that Casey had already put a ‘mature content’ filter on it (which is on by default). With that in mind, I guess it’s no big deal anyway.
I don’t know what the Radar thread is (will I find out? not sure if I want to yet) but I thought this innocent little thread about living in Seattle was gonna get kicked off to the “hot” section.
Brought it up with Mr Cranky last night and he found it strange that we’d get into such a debate–his BikeForums.net people only ever yell at each other about looking dumb on their bicycles, or some such–but it seems like the ladies *like* to get all riled up online. But heck, I am a lady (um, not by all definitions, as previously discussed) so my experience tends to be with the female-oriented boards (Ravelry, Get Crafty, LJ’s knitting community).
I used to get into arguments with people online but it wasn’t really fun for me, even when I had the spare time for it. Now I just like to share my opinion… and do I care how others feel about it? Not really, though I do appreciate actual discussion.

I’m actually rather saddened by this.
