My handspun from Spunky Eclectic’s roving, in colorway Dogwood. This hank is about 8 oz and about 580 yards. The singles are overspun in places and the plying is underspun, I think. I don’t know for sure, of course, because I’m a n00b.![]()
But the colorway is interesting and beautiful, so I can’t fault Amy at Spunky Eclectic. I know this spinning thing takes a lot of practice, so I’m not discouraged. I’m not fishing for compliments, either, but if you’ve got advice I’m all ears! And if my postmortem is off, please correct me.
One great bit of advice from my homegrrl Susan was to stand the lazy kate on its side, rather than the way I would have assumed it worked best (due to the photos that came with it and the picture on the website). The effect of this was that gravity kept the bobbins stable as opposed to jumping all over the place as I was plying. Very good advice; thanks, friend!

It’s best to learn from our grrlfriends, eh? Spinning well is all about practice. You’re doing better than you think!

Posted 23 Feb 2008 at 6:26 pm ¶I certainly know nothing about spinning, but the colors are very pretty!
Posted 23 Feb 2008 at 6:51 pm ¶I think it looks great.
It doesn’t look overspun in the ply to me (another n00b), but perhaps you weren’t holding both plies with the same tension? In some places it looks like they aren’t wrapping evening, but that may be because of the difference in diameter.
Keep it up, fellow spinster!

Your spinning looks just beautiful. Sure, it may not be perfect, but that part of the fun of handspun! I think it looks just lovely, and you clearly figured something out because the Goblin Eyes is absolutely gorgeous.
I did have a comment about the lazy kate though. I don’t have that particular model, but the bobbins shouldn’t jump around much when it’s in the normal position if the tension is adjusted properly. Does tightening the knob that controls the string running over your bobbins not settle them down? If not, you can add extra tension by sending the string over one bobbin then under the next and over a third on the end. This will further tighten the string and should keep those bobbins in place, even if you’re only actually plying from 2 of them.
Keep up the spinning, it is lovely!
