In my last post I celebrated my son’s birthday and posted a photo of him at age five. In the photo, James is wearing a favorite t-shirt; the design on this shirt is an illustration by Graeme Base from his book Animalia.
If you’re unfamiliar with this picture book I encourage you to acquaint yourself. It’s an amazingly, beautifully illustrated alphabet book. Each letter is represented by an alliterative description and a detailed illustration filled with items that begin with the featured letter. (I adore alphabet picture books; another of my favorites is called Butterfly Alphabet—it’s stunning, too—and I have collected a few others over the years.)
The illustration that graces James’s shirt is for the letter “L.” On that page the descriptions reads, “Lazy Lions Lounging In The Local Library.” In the illustration there’s also a lobster, and a lizard, and a locomotive, and a lamp, and a ladder. . .
We still have that t-shirt tucked away.
Hey, guess what? Hannah knit a Big Funky Hat, as a gift for her little brother. It’s all the rage now among his friends–lucky guy! Go tell her how great it looks!
ETA: You can buy a limited edition print of “Lazy Lions” and other Graeme Base illustrations here.

I love that photo! But you knew I’d say that.
