I am no longer a fan of Orson Scott Card

I know this is a sorry excuse for a post, but I gotta pass it on–

Orson Scott Card Wants You To Rise Up Against the Gay Menace

In his column in Mormon Times, Card warns that legal recognition of gay marriage “marks the end of democracy in America”–

If America becomes a place where our children are taken from us by law and forced to attend schools where they are taught that cohabitation is as good as marriage, that motherhood doesn’t require a husband or father, and that homosexuality is as valid a choice as heterosexuality for their future lives, then why in the world should married people continue to accept the authority of such a government?

What these dictator-judges do not seem to understand is that their authority extends only as far as people choose to obey them.

How long before married people answer the dictators thus: Regardless of law, marriage has only one definition, and any government that attempts to change it is my mortal enemy. I will act to destroy that government and bring it down, so it can be replaced with a government that will respect and support marriage, and help me raise my children in a society where they will expect to marry in their turn.

Biological imperatives trump laws. American government cannot fight against marriage and hope to endure. If the Constitution is defined in such a way as to destroy the privileged position of marriage, it is that insane Constitution, not marriage, that will die.

OSC used to be one of my favorite Mormons, not to mention writers, and Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow used to be in my Top Ten of All Time, but this is a deal breaker. Sad, sad, sad.

    Nephi sez:
That the author of “Ender’s Game” and “Songmaster” could write such a circular-logical and frankly bizarre diatribe makes me wonder what the back story is. Is he a closet case? Did his favored son come out to him? Did he get a big ol’ boner during “Brokeback Mountain”? Did he, on some subconscious level, decide that to make good with his church he had to build construct some kind of pseudo-intellectual argument against gay marriage?

The irrational fear that lurks beneath his stumbling “arguments” makes me embarrassed for him.

Meanwhile, my own marriage seems to be doing OK despite all the homos that are marrying each other. IN MY BACKYARD!!!1!

Nephi neglected to mention that those homos are having many of their weddings officiated by a horse. Who likely got his priest certification from the back of Rolling Stone.

Sorry about OSC being such a asshat - I didn’t read his books simply because my sister did.

The logic is stunning, tho. Maybe still writing sci-fi? Sounds like sci-fi to me, alternate reality and all.

How completely irrational. “Children taken from us by law” … what? Is he referring to the taking of the children from the cult-Mormon group, or does he just mean that we require children to be educated (home school is an option many take, should we share that with him?)? Personally, as far as the mothers requiring fathers or husbands - and did you notice that he gave ‘father’ as an option, not just ‘husband’ - one of our greatest crises is not the gender/sex of the parent, but the lack of parenting at all. Creating loving, guiding homes where children are safe and taught how to live in community is the priority in my book.

“I will act to destroy that government” … seriously, he just said he’d try to destroy the government? And we are afraid of terrorists from outside the country?! And could anything please me more than not being related to someone who actually says, “a society where they will expect to marry in their turn.” So now our children are automotons that must do our bidding? Yikes.

And maybe someone should explain that there have been studies showing not only do homosexual couples have lower divorce rates and lower abuse rates, but homosexuality is not simply choice but has it’s own “biological imperatives.” Again, focusing on hate and petty differences - yes I think it’s petty, who cares what others do in their bedrooms - is not something to be proud of. It is a pity and a detriment to our society.

I think we need to find him his own little island so he can go live there and start his own government and religion. That would relieve all of his problems, and some of ours too, I think.
